Social Networking
Social media has it's good and bad. Many people depend on it in our everyday lives and that can take a toll on us a lot of times. But it allows us to maintain a relationship with our friends and family no matter the distance. Facebook is a social networking platform that allows people to be in touch with whomever they want. This allows for people to constantly be updated on a person's information without having to actually be in touch.
Over the years, Facebook has been losing its appeal to teens and young adults. Twitter allows anyone to view their tweet and interact with them, whereas for facebook you'd have to friend someone to share information with. After failing to acquire Twitter in 2009, Facebook slowly began to mimic features on twitters that to have more of an appeal to their audience. According to the article, "Facebook Is Going for Some Twitter Sensibility," Claire Miller mentions how Facebook added new twitter like features to their site such as tagging and mentioning friends in status updates. A lot of social networking platforms are envious of twitter because users tend to spend most of their time there rather than other sites.
Social media does have its dark and people need to start being careful with the information they choose to share on the internet. There are many who post multiple status updates on their social media daily to keep their friends in the loop. According to an article, "Leaving 'Friendprints': How Online Social Networks Are Redefining Privacy and Personal Security," the information we share online is being combined with new technology to gather information on us making it like a virtual fingerprint which is tracking our online patterns of behavior. This information is being given to companies for their own use as well as identity thieves who tend to go after these sorts of patterns.
Privacy is huge and the way social media platforms put it into upgrade is major for users. We trust these online platforms with our sensitive information and hopefully, over the years companies will take a bigger leap on privacy and security considering how big that is for their consumers.
